Learn traditional chinese with zhuyin12/12/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() With me already knowing simplified Chinese and having spare time on my hands, I decided to embark on a journey to try to learn these 37 symbols so that I can also type traditional Chinese characters with the keyboard, feel a little cool about myself and gain some extra knowledge. By stringing the symbols together, it thus forms the pinyin of the traditional Chinese character and also informs readers on how it can be read. Traditional Chinese on the other hand, makes use of zhuyin (注音 or also known as bopomofo) which is made up of 37 symbols, each with a unique sound. Along with the Taiwan variety shows that I watched, I noticed that they sometimes played games related to these traditional Chinese characters and I eventually came to realise that the system behind traditional Chinese characters was different from simplified Chinese characters (or at least how I was taught simplified Chinese here in Singapore).Īs best as I can explain it, simplified Chinese had been romanised where we learn how to read it through the hanyupinyin (汉语拼音), where the pinyin (in alphabets) would inform us on how to read a Chinese character. Growing up, I have watched a fair share of Taiwanese dramas and constant reading of the Chinese subtitles led me to pick up on how to read traditional Chinese characters as well. ![]()
